cemetery where he was buried. hundreds of people followed behind in a proceed session that stretched a quarter of a mile or more and lasted for 20 minutes. jeff hager, abc 2 news. >> thanks, jeff. well the family of a maryland soldier who died in iraq, sergeant john burner the third was waiting for tests for a respiratory illness. john burner junior said his 32-year-old son died two days after visiting a medical fifth in kuwait. he said his son was told he couldn't have a blood test because laboratory equipment had been shipped out as part of the planned redeployment. he said his son was given antibottics an an inhaler. he was told it may be months before he gets the autopsy report. a man charged in the murder of an offduty maryland state trooper outside a prince georges county restaurant.

another man anthony milton the third also faces murder charges. a detective testified today at a preliminary hearing that milton told authorities that he and williams went to appleby's and williams wait id near a tree and shot williams as he left. a columbia man accused of stabbing his ex-wife to death and setting her apartment on fire is in police custody. police say they arrested 35-year-old vernon white yesterday after he was released from the hospital. wlite is charged with first degree murder and arson in the death of 34-year-old thelma wynn. police say white had been staying with wynn, stabbed her to death, barricaded the front door and set fire to the apartment. white was hurt during the incident and was hospitalized and under police guard. he was denied bail. should a man who beat a dog so severely that the dog died be allowed to work with other animals? the maryland spca says

no. and they can't understand why a judge sentenced the man to perform community service at the spca shelter. roosevelt leftwich joins us with with more. >> reporter: police say darrell chambers beat a little dog to death after it bit his wife. it would have been a chance to make amends, the spca says he can make amends somewhere else. the dog was beaten badly with a plastic pipe the police report says. police arrested 48-year-old derrick chambers after an anonymous 911 caller said they saw chambers hitting the dog, stuffing in him a plastic bag and throwing him in the struck. they found the dog near death and took it to the shelter where it had to be euthanized. chambers was sentenced toa '50 hours of community service at the maryland spca. >> we would never recommend that a child molester do community service with the boy scouts and

we should never recommend that a person charged with animal abuse do community service with animals. there's just too much risk of harm. in this case, we believe given the severity of the crime, that this perpetrator should be punished. >> reporter: griffin is a member of the animal abuse task force that was set up to keep an eye on such cases. she said such a sentence is outrageous since no one asked the spca first. >> there is no chance we will have an animal abuser volunteer. it's our job to protect the animals and we have to look out for the animals. >> reporter: she said people who volunteer are here because they love animals. both she and griffin say they can't believe a court and prosecutors would order him to be around animals. the city state's attorney's office said the case was poor and chambers wasn't read his

miranda rights. when chambers brought the community service idea before the judge, he said yes. >> this was a case where we could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and the defense attorney approached the judge and recommended a step. we agreed. the defense attorney indicated that he had been in touch with spca and he would continue to work with them to see that this community service was performed. >> so what happens next? since the spca doesn't want him, burns said it's up to chambers' attorney to figure out a way to petition the court for a new sentence. well, the man who helped uncover watergate and give us intimate accounts of the white house come out with a new book. bob woodward's book takes a hard look at obama's choices.

the market yet. this week marks national child passenger safety week. it's a subject that often has some parents baffled and confused on securing your children. all across the state, authorities are offering safety checks to educate parents. tonight, abc news slee johnson has five tips on how to use the seats. >> reporter: myra weemen is the safety manage foreaaa atlantic and the mother of two children and making sure her kids are secure in their seats is a major priority. during child passenger safety weeks, authorities are educating parents on securing children. here are five tips. the first tip is making sure you're using your booster seat correctly is you want to understand that a booster is designed to boost the child up. vehicles were made for adults. this booster seat is going to help this 7-year-old sit much safer with the seat belt. the second tip is knowing the two different kinds of booster seats. ben is sitting on a backless

booster seat of the there's also high-back booster seats. if your vehicle has head restraints, you can use a backless car seat. if your child's head is above the back of the seat, then you want to use a high-back booster seat. the third tip is you always want to test drive the booster seat before you purchase it. bring your son or daughter to the store, have them sit in the seat and take it out to your vehicle to make sure that it fits your vehicle. not all booster seats are the same. the fourth tip is remember maryland law requires a child up until their 8th birthday to sit in some form of federally approved seat. so unless they're 4 foot 9 or 65 pounds, theshtd be in a booster seat. and the last tip is when to give up the booster. we're going to show you that even though ben is 7 years old, if i take the booster seat out,

and he sits on the car, he should be able to bring his behind all the way back to the seat and his knees should be able to fit comfortable bly over the vehicle seat. the only way he can get his knees over is if he scoots forward. if he puts the seat belt on, without a booster seat, you can see how it's going to rub his neck. the next thing you know, he may put it under his arm, which is very unsafe. >> consulting an expert can be critical to ensure that children are secured in the safest possible way. sherrie johnson, abc 2 news. fall is bringing in some stormy weather? >> we're technically in the last hours of summer here and wouldn't you know it, 2010 being the weather year it is, we're going out with severe weather

across the state. >> sounds like that kind of year. >> fall is going to come in with more hot days. take a look outside, here's a look at our current watches around warnings. we have a severe thunderstorm watch statewide until 10:00 and severe thunderstorm warnings for northern baltimore county and also thorn harford county. take you to maryland's most powerful radar and show you what's going on. these are lightning strikes. north of the belt way, we could get a little bit of a glancing blow but as we take you further north, you can see most of this is north of jarrettsville and moving a pretty good clip due east right now. so this storm as we put out sort of our cone tracker here and go into storm tracker mode, you can see places like delta and # in -- delta in 26 minutes. you can see if it holds together rising sun in about 50 minutes

or so you'll feel the effects. mainly gusty winds and there will be some dangerous lightning with this as well. sky getting a little hazier, a little more ominous but most of the action is north of the city. temperature close to 90, you're feeling that. downtown is warmer, that's down at the airport 9. muggy conditions, too. our weather net camera in mount airy, you can see as we look toe west, clear blue skies and there comes that stormy west from the west. that is that same storm cell tracking across carroll county. this thing has already expired. right now, temperature wise 91 harbor. gusty wind with that cluster of active weather. our radar picture lighting up.

in health news in evening, got milk? a new study from israel found dieters who had a high calcium intake actually lost more week than people who consumed little or no milk products regardless of the rest of the diet. dr. timothy johnson has more. >> reporter: researchers have found that dieters consumed milk or milk products lost more weight than people wlopg not eat or drink dairy regardless of the rest of their diet. participants with the highest dairy calcium intake lost about 12 pounds at the ends of the two-year study. the participants who drank the least amount of milk products lost an average of 7 pounds. more than 300 overweight middle aged adults participated in a study that evaluated a variety
